Building Self-Confidence: The Connection with Competence

The mantra “competence equals confidence” often resonates in our pursuit of self-assuredness. This journey usually commences in our youth, marked by small victories that gradually reinforce our belief in our abilities. Each accomplishment contributes to our growing self-assurance, fostering resilience in the face of obstacles. This enduring spirit, often dubbed “grit,” enables us to persevere, undeterred by challenges, creating a history of triumph that fuels our expectations for future success.

However, solely anchoring confidence in task accomplishment creates a fragile foundation. This variant of confidence hinges solely on performance outcomes. The question emerges: What transpires when we encounter failure? How do we react when confronted with setbacks? If such moments lead to feelings of defeat and inadequacy, this signifies a reliance on performance-based validation.

Beyond Performance: The Influence of Identity

Beyond performance-based confidence lies a deeper facet—identity. It’s the false identity, the masks we wear, the roles we adopt, the illusions we project to the world and ourselves. Are we smart, athletic, creative? Our self-perceived identity shapes our behaviors, influences our actions, and guides our quest for validation. We are prone to seek evidence that bolsters this self-imposed identity, often resisting any contradictory notions.

For instance, envision someone who sees themselves as the smartest in the room; they relentlessly strive to validate this identity, even when faced with evidence to the contrary. The same applies to athleticism or any other false identity. This reliance on external validation is misleading because true identity isn’t defined solely by achievements.

Embracing True Identity

Genuine identity transcends performance, persisting despite outcomes and external perceptions. My conversations with roommates led me to ponder this concept deeply. For instance, high performers garner praise and accolades, often seeking validation from others. Yet, genuine identity arises from knowing who you are beyond accomplishments and external appraisals.

For me, faith in Jesus Christ shapes my identity. This unwavering belief anchors me as a child of God, impervious to external opinions. It’s a recognition that being a child is a foundational truth—parents’ unwavering love and desire for their child’s success parallel the heavenly relationship. This connection assures us that resources and inheritance await us, fostering a sense of inherent worth.

A Triumph Beyond Measure

Amidst the sea of possibilities, we are born—a victorious testament to the millions of others who didn’t make the cut. It’s akin to a race where countless contenders vie for a single prize, and through remarkable odds, you emerged triumphant. This realization underscores our innate potential and the unique journey we’ve embarked upon.

Rising to the Leadership Challenge

Armed with this profound perspective, let’s elevate our leadership journey. By embracing our authentic identity and rejecting performance-based validation, we lead from a place of true strength. Our true worth doesn’t rest solely on accomplishments, but on a deeper understanding of who we are. Let’s ascend to leadership with this newfound awareness and empower others to do the same.
